Local Flu Brew

Grindelia, Rose Hips, Elderberry

Grindelia, Rose Hips, Elderberry

This flu and cough combination that has swept Nevada County, including every member of our household, needs to end. I attempted to get rid of it with my “nice” tasting native herbs, such as pearly everlasting, elderberry and wild mint, but it took a full week for my son to stop coughing. Now that my husband has it, I’m not messing around.

Here’s my Flu Brew Recipe for anyone unlucky enough to get the latest virus:

–Bring 2 quarts of water to a boil.

–Add 1 oregon grape root (or stem), peeled and chopped, 1/2 cup elderberry, 1/2 cup rose hips and simmer for 30 minutes.

–Turn off heat and add 1 cup wild mint and 2 cups mullein leaves.  Steep for 30 minutes, strain and then drink 1 cup every 2 hours.

Note: Select an oregon grape root or stem with a bright yellow color after peeling, which is an indicator of berberine, an effective anti-viral.
